Interior Design: Tips For Beginners

A successful interior design requires a precise determination of its needs, an adaptation to the possibilities of your rooms and … a little extravagance. How to keep a good dose of moderation and make the most of your interiors? What are the right patterns and colors? What characterizes good interior design? Why isn’t a specific style everything?

Interior design has a long history: after all, we have paid a lot of attention to the appearance of the space that has surrounded us for centuries. Our home was, is and will be the cocoon of your life. Certain principles have always guided the choice and arrangement of the place where we live: it is our little microcosm, our command center, where our loved ones reside and where daily life takes place.

Even today: although we live much faster and technology has been present in our daily lives for a long time, we continue to follow old habits in choosing, building and furnishing our apartments. In the past, a bottle of alcohol was built into the wall to ensure the good fortune of the household. Today the meaning remains the same, but the bottle ends up on the table when you invite friends over and have a housewarming party.

Our houses are no longer our fortresses, but they certainly remain our calling cards. It is therefore useful to remember a few simple rules for decorating them. Here are some tips that will make your home decorating job easier, even if you don’t have any experience in this area. At work!

Interior design from scratch: spatial planning and interior design

When decorating an interior, it’s good to make a clear plan of what you want to achieve. You have to think carefully about the function of each part and clearly define your needs. If you have enough space, it is worth dividing the house into two areas: private and reception.

The entrance

Guests are most often greeted in the vestibule or hallway, so the interior design of these places should focus primarily on adequate lighting and sufficient space. The entrance area should be clean and tidy. It will be good to limit the number of furniture, this will avoid the impression of clutter and overload. A large wardrobe and / or a hanger and a shoe cabinet are sufficient.

If you have a small anteroom, you can make the apartment seem bigger from the moment you enter. Two large mirrors hung opposite each other or two identical soft-light lamps will give the space a more spacious and welcoming appearance. A good idea for the layout of the entrance is also to use a different floor from the rest of the house, this will be a stylistic border and it will clearly distinguish this space from other parts of the house.

Eliminate unnecessary equipment

Many apartments are designed to highlight their space. Not without reason: more space is associated with prestige, wealth and success. Just look at the high ceilings of pre-war buildings. Of course, not everyone can afford a large area, which is why it is worth using several proven methods of optical magnification of your homes and apartments. The easiest way is to eliminate all unnecessary equipment or replace it with smaller equipment. Although tall furniture is spacious, it too easily dominates the space in which it is placed.

Let in the sunlight

The light will also help you fight for space (and for a better mood!). Let more people in and, if possible, install large windows to make the room appear larger than it actually is. But if you don’t have room for large windows, try to make the most of the smaller ones. Leave them uncovered during the day. Ditch heavy curtains and roller blinds, better light and bright curtains, which gently let the sun’s rays pass through.

Interior decoration: colors can do a lot

The right choice and the right combination of colors are of great importance for your well-being. When choosing colors, you should be guided by your own sense of aesthetics, the function of the piece being painted, as well as the impression that a given color evokes. You need to remember that not all shades are suitable for one place, almost no one will paint all the walls in the living room black.

White is your friend!

White is the safest color: if you keep it clean, it goes with everything, and any other color will go easily with it. White painted apartments will appear comfortable and clean (which is especially important for owners who rent apartments). But be careful, because too much of this color can cause your home, instead of being organized and tidy, to become boring and sterile. So try to achieve different shades of white and break its dominance with other colors. Additions will also come in handy, especially furniture in a shabby chic style, i.e. stylized on the old ones, will do wonders, although you can also go the other way around and make an interior full of smooth surfaces. (they have a modern character and optically enlarge the space).

Play with colors

Before you start thinking about wall colors, consider what you want in a given room. What character do you want him to have? How often will you spend time there? Is mood or rather function decisive?

Warm colors can work well in a large interior if you want to increase comfort at the expense of space. On the other hand, if you want your apartment to appear larger, paint the walls in light, cool tones. By looking for specific colors, you can achieve a particular character for your interiors, for example bottle green or burgundy will give depth and chic, making the house elegant and mysterious at the same time. But each time you have to remember not to overdo it. While the initial effect can be quite impressive, some colors (like purple, orange, or red) can be too overwhelming in the long run.

Focus on details

The first concerns the accent color of the walls. Instead of painting all the walls white, emphasize one of them with a different color. A technique will enhance the room and fight against monotony. A separate wall will attract attention. Place a table next to it in the dining room, and a sofa or TV in the living room.

Attention can be drawn not only to the color, but also to the furniture and accessories:

  • a piece of furniture (key element of mid-century style)
  • a colorful accent in the form of cushions,
  • carpet,
  • table
  • poster

It will definitely improve the mood of the household members and make a good impression on the guests. Correctly selected furniture and accessories will allow the previously austere space to gain a new quality.

Interior design of a living room with a single black wall

Since we are already talking about accessories, we have to mention one of the most important ingredients of an original interior design, namely rhythm. It defines how a room “moves” through repeating or appropriately composed patterns, colors or accessories. Maintaining an appropriate rhythm will unify the interior and avoid visual chaos. There is a lot of leeway!
